History of Nainital
Nainital is mainly indicated to the ‘Manas Khand’ of
the ‘Skanda Purana’ as Tri-Rishi-Sarovar, the river of the three sages, Atri,Pulastya
and Pulaha who were believed to have reached here on a penitent pilgrimage, and
found no water to satisfy their thirst dug a hole and tapped water into it from
Mansarovar the holy lake in Tibet.
The Second significant mythological mention to
Nainital is as one of 64 ‘Shakti Peeths’. These regions were created wherever fragments
of charred body of Sati tumbled, when Lord Shiva was carrying around her corpse
in sorrow. It is said the left eye (Nain) of Sati fell over here and this gave
rise to patron divinity of city Nainital. It is said that the lake is shaped in
the emerald eye shape. Naina Devi shrine is located at the northern end of the
lake. Thus name of Nainital derivated after Naina and the tal (Lake).
