In the year 1839 an English entrepreneur from Rosa , Mr. P. Barron a sugar dealer and his colleague an eager hunter strayed into the hills while hounding they got lost and while finding there way back found themselves on the wondrous spot. So stunned was Barron with the vision of the mild lake that he left the sugar business and construct an European Society on coasts of the lake .In 1841, Nainital emerged in issue of the ‘Englishman Calcutta’ proclaiming the sighting of a lake in the locality of Almora.
